Background of the Study

Grassroots political mobilization refers to efforts aimed at mobilizing ordinary citizens to participate in the electoral process, often through local community engagement, political rallies, door-to-door campaigns, and other community-based initiatives. In Nigeria, grassroots mobilization has played a vital role in increasing voter turnout, particularly in rural areas where traditional political structures and party machinery are less influential (Sule & Muktar, 2023). In Borgu LGA, Niger State, grassroots mobilization has been recognized as a key strategy to enhance political participation, as the region's population faces challenges such as low political awareness, distance to polling stations, and limited access to voter registration resources.

Studies have shown that well-organized grassroots mobilization campaigns can lead to increased voter turnout by educating citizens about their civic duties, encouraging participation in elections, and facilitating easier access to polling stations (Adeleke & Ogunleye, 2024). In Borgu LGA, various community leaders, traditional rulers, and political actors engage in grassroots mobilization efforts to reach out to the electorate, particularly in rural areas where voter apathy is prevalent. These efforts are crucial in ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in elections, thereby strengthening democracy at the local level.

This study seeks to investigate the impact of grassroots political mobilization on voter turnout in Borgu LGA, Niger State, by examining the effectiveness of these campaigns and identifying the factors that drive voter participation in the region. The research will provide valuable insights into how grassroots political mobilization strategies can be used to improve electoral outcomes in similar rural communities across Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to mobilize voters at the grassroots level, voter turnout in Borgu LGA remains inconsistent and, in some elections, disappointingly low. While grassroots mobilization campaigns have been conducted, the effectiveness of these efforts in increasing voter turnout has not been comprehensively assessed. Factors such as the reach and intensity of campaigns, the role of local leaders, and socio-economic barriers to voting may be contributing to this low voter engagement (Ahmed & Eze, 2024). This study aims to examine the impact of grassroots political mobilization on voter turnout in Borgu LGA, addressing the gap in knowledge regarding the effectiveness of such efforts and providing recommendations for enhancing voter engagement in the region.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of grassroots political mobilization on voter turnout in Borgu LGA, Niger State.

  2. To identify the key factors that influence voter participation in grassroots mobilization campaigns in Borgu LGA.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of grassroots mobilization strategies in increasing political awareness and participation among the electorate in Borgu LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does grassroots political mobilization impact voter turnout in Borgu LGA, Niger State?

  2. What are the key factors that influence voter participation in grassroots mobilization campaigns in Borgu LGA?

  3. How effective are grassroots mobilization strategies in enhancing political awareness and voter engagement in Borgu LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Grassroots political mobilization has a positive effect on voter turnout in Borgu LGA.

  2. Key factors such as local leadership, accessibility of polling stations, and voter education significantly influence participation in grassroots mobilization campaigns.

  3. Effective grassroots mobilization strategies lead to higher political awareness and greater voter engagement in Borgu LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide essential insights into the role of grassroots political mobilization in increasing voter turnout, particularly in rural areas like Borgu LGA. By examining the effectiveness of grassroots campaigns, the research will offer recommendations for improving mobilization strategies and enhancing voter participation in subsequent elections. The findings will be of value to political parties, civil society organizations, and electoral bodies interested in improving voter turnout, especially in underrepresented regions (Alhassan & Kamalu, 2024).

Furthermore, the study will contribute to the broader discourse on electoral participation, offering strategies to overcome barriers to voting in rural areas, such as lack of awareness and inadequate access to polling stations. This research will serve as a guide for future electoral campaigns and voter education programs aimed at increasing civic engagement in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on grassroots political mobilization in Borgu LGA, Niger State, specifically examining the impact of these mobilization efforts on voter turnout during the 2023 general elections. The research will assess the effectiveness of mobilization campaigns, identify influential factors, and evaluate the success of these strategies in enhancing voter participation.

A limitation of this study is that the findings may not be applicable to other regions in Niger State or Nigeria, as grassroots mobilization strategies may vary depending on local conditions. Additionally, the study may face challenges in obtaining accurate data on voter turnout and mobilization efforts due to the sensitive nature of electoral participation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Grassroots Political Mobilization: Community-driven efforts to raise political awareness, encourage voter participation, and support candidates or political parties, typically through local-level engagement.

  • Voter Turnout: The percentage of eligible voters who participate in an election by casting their vote.

  • Voter Participation: The act of engaging in the electoral process, including registering to vote, attending political rallies, and voting in elections.
